Ports 1961 Spring 2010 Collection:
Journeys to Japan
by Ian L.

For those of us in New England not familiar with the luxury label Ports 1961, think of it as your passport, your personal journey through the global village, making a few stops along the way and taking a moment to peruse the fashions before preparing for your next exotic "port of call".

Ports is a label with global appeal and creative director Tia Cibani is the perfect example of the brand's global village philosophy. Tia was born in Africa but has lived in Canada and China for a number of years. She travels often and she draws on those various experiences to create Ports' globally inspired collections.

For the new Spring 2010 collection, we journey with Tia Cibani to Japan. Many of the pieces of the collection showed elements of Japanese design ranging from the Kimono silhouette and Obi sashes, to floral motifs and even Origami.

Colors were a range of shimmering white, ivory, pinks, reds and pale shades of lavender. Also evident were metallic shades of bronze and silver.

Fabrics came in a range of silks with prints and softly draped jersey for day, as well as draped an pleated silk organza and shantung for evening.

The silhouettes overall were loose fitting. The pants were pleated and loose with tapered legs. Most dresses were not form fitting. Sleeves were three quarter in length and the trend of asymmetrical sleeves has carried over from last season.

Founded as recently as 2004, Ports is steadily growing in sales and popularity. For its presentation at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, Ports has taken the largest venue, the Bryant Park main tent and has filed it to capacity.  All of us in attendance were thrilled with our latest journey and  I'm sure that all of us are looking forward to see where in the world Ports will take us next.
