Nirva Derbekyan's love of fashion started strongly at an early age, age 10 to be exact. Some sketches here, a few sewn dresses for dolls there and the next thing you know, Nirva is on her way to college. She graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA. The education was not finished however, as she then traveled to London where she studied in marketing and business for fashion. After a few stints interning with other designers and manufacturing companies both here and abroad, Nirva was ready to design on her own, settling at a little atelier in Lexington Massachusetts.
Nirva's inspiration for her designs comes from many sources. A lot of it comes from her family, her Armenian background and from her many travels. To say that her family is quite artistic is an understatement, occupations in the family include a ballroom dancer, an actor, and a painter. Nirva loves to include subtle details in her designs and close inspection of her work reveals lots of innovations. She tells me that she can't help but design, she even designs in her dreams and wakes with a strong motivation to make that dream design a reality.
This fall has been a busy season for Nirva. She's shown her latest collection at two fashion shows and a few trunk shows. She's also busy putting together the next collection for Fall of 2009. She assures me that she'll take a break from it all and go on holidays soon. Of course, knowing Nirva, she won't stop working even on vacation. Wherever she goes, inspiration is soon to follow. Rest assured, the Spring 2010 collection will be heavily influenced by that next exotic locale. I can't wait to find out what that is.
