Ovations for the Cure presents:
The Night of the Monarch Gala & Stuart Weitzman
Fashion Show 2009

by Ian L.

The Ovations for the Cure fundraising organization was born from the kind heart of Patricia Franchi Flaherty. Know simply as Patty to her close friends, Mrs. Flaherty was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999.  Thanks to surgery and treatment, Patty's cancer went into remission for the next 5 years.

During that time, she did all she could to comfort and support her fellow patients. She wanted to do more to fight ovarian cancer and so with the help of friends and family, she combined her love of fashion with fundraising and created the first Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show in 2006. The show was a great success and shortly after, Ovations for the Cure was born.

Ovations was Patty's way to fight the disease. The non-profit organization quickly raised awareness and funds for research, pushed for new testing and treatment options and provided much need moral support for cancer patients and families.

This year marks the fourth Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show and the first Night of the Monarch Gala. The Night of the Monarch Gala is in honor of Patty Franchi Flaherty who, after nine years of fighting ovarian cancer, has passed away in August of 2008. Her friends, family and the Ovations staff are determined to keep her dream

alive. The Ovations for the Cure organization will see to it that Patty's generous spirit and determination lives on.

In the course of the evening's events, guest speakers spoke about their own experiences with the disease and some spoke about their friendship with Patty. However it was Joyce Kulhawik's speech that touched the audience the most. Joyce was not only a very close friend of Patty's but she, herself is also a cancer survivor. Joyce Kulhawik is a three time cancer survivor and she knows better than most how greatly support is needed to fight the disease.

Awards were given throughout the evening but one very special award went to a young lady named Molly McGaffigan. Molly received the Awareness award by helping to raise over $8000 dollars to the Ovations' Patient Awareness Program. Molly is only 16 years old and was diagnosed with cancer at age 15. Molly went into surgery to have a ten pound tumor removed. As a cancer survivor, Molly has become an Ambassador for Ovations and helps to spread her message to other young ladies about the disease.

In all, the Night of the Monarch Gala and Stuart Weitzman Fashion Show was a great success. The ballroom at the Westin Waterfront Hotel was filled with guests and attendance increased from the previous year. Ovations will once again host designer Carmen Marc Valvo in the Spring of next year. Please do your part in supporting Ovations for the Cure by attending their many shows and fundraisers.
