Malan Breton Fall 2009 Collection
by Ian J Larraga

Though Malan Breton's stint at Season 3 of Project Runway was all too breif, he has made the most in his time in the spotlight, more so than any other contestant on the show which even includes the eventual winners.

Malan has garnered a strong and loyal fan base. He has shown his couture collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week since 2004 and in 2008, he showed his first Ready to Wear collection. No other Project Runway participant has been as consistent and none can boast their own atelier in New York's East District. Malan has also had the privilege of dressing numerous celebrities such as Minnie Driver, Nikki Blonsky and singer Jody Watley. The latest actress to be spotted in Malan Breton is Katrina Bowden of 30 Rock. She wore a black and white cocktail dress from Malan's Spring 2009 collection.

For the Fall 2009 collection, Malan has opted not to show at the Bryant Park tents. He's not alone in that decision. Top designers such as Vera Wang, Naeem Kahn, Monique Lhuillier, Carmen Marc Valvo, and Betsey Johnson have all chosen to show in other venues in what truly is a sign of these times.
Designer Malan Breton puts the finishng touches on fellow Project Runway veteran, top model Amanda Fields' ensemble.
The Eli Klein Fine Art Gallery was the perfect venue. It currently has a fine collection of highly popular Chinese Contemporary Art. It worked beautifully with the fall collection which had hints of Asian design elements and a bold and clean color palette of black, white, cream, grey and shades of red. I especially liked the wide legged, high waisted pants which made the model's legs appear incredibly long. Malan's inspiration came from the legend of the Phoenix or firebird as he called it (hence the shades of red) and the feeling of renewed hope and optimism that the world felt during the inauguration of the new President. In that spirit, Malan incorporated new design elements not seen in previous collections.

The Fall 2009 Presentation was also a benefit for the Hope Lodge. The American Cancer Society created the Hope Lodge in order to provide cancer patients and their families from distant locations a place to stay while undergoing treatment. This charity is important to Malan, who's dear relative has passed away from ovarian cancer some time ago.

Daniel and Wesley are planning to present their debut collection this fall.
Aside from design and his involvement in various charities, Malan is also a video commentator for L'AG magazine where he interviews other designers. He also makes guest appearances in the media for programs on Bravo and MTV. For the near term, he currently has plans to expand his business with a new line of accessories and menswear in development. There are also plans for a book regarding the subject of the art of style. I believe that Malan will be successful in these future ventures. Malan is the type of man that truly believes, deep in his heart, that dreams can come true. And oddly enough, when it comes to Malan Breton, his dreams do have a way of coming true.
