Mass College of Art Presents: Labeled - Senior Collections 2009
by Ian L.
This year's graduating class of 2009 is quite possibly the best if not the largest in Mass Art's history. Thirty three students displayed their best ensembles of roughly four to six pieces to show on the runway. Helping them make the final selections are some of the top names in our local industry such as Thom Baker of Puma, Debi Greenberg of Louis Boston, Jennifer Reale of Jennifer Reale Design and Michael Schaffer of Reebok International.
The class of 2009 exhibited a wide range talent and designs skills. My personal favorites included designs in the eveningwear and bridal categories by students Amanda Feeley, Layla Raad, Freda Kahinda and Ines Angelica Antigua. Also of note were burlesque inspired designs by Ashley Collette, costume designs inspired by French royalty of the eighteenth century by Paige Skinner, the highly wearable and almost avant garde designs by Maya Molina-Araujo ( I especially love the black leather jacket) and lastly, the multi-functional and innovative children's wear designs by Jane Sommer-Fuller. There were also many ready to wear designs from the other students that could have easily been sold at top boutiques. For students who want to make a living with fashion design, unique and highly sellable clothing is an absolute must.
This year also marked another first for the Mass College of Art's Fashion Design program, a new collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission where students were given access to fine, luxury Italian fabrics to be used in their designs. The ITC made a special presentation to the audience during the show and were proud to be part of this major local event. Both the ITC and Mass Art hope to make this collaboration last for many years to come.
Mass Art's Fashion Design program has truly grown through out the years and as the popularity of fashion design increases thanks to shows such as Project Runway and The Fashion Show, I expect it to grow further. The collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission further enhances the program and potential students will have more experiences available to them.
