Henry N. Jackson presents:
Fall Collection 2009/2010
at The Boston Hyatt Regency
by Ian L.
It's been over a decade since Boston born designer Henry N. Jackson has shown a collection here. Since the time he left Boston in the 90's, Henry moved on from his high end Ready to Wear business to get back into designing his true passion, Couture. Henry launch his new Couture line in Paris where consumers there are more likely to purchase and understand the value of expensive and personally fitted garments. All clothes are made in Paris where Henry has managed to employ highly skilled seamstresses formerly from the House of Yves Saint Laurent and Theirry Mugler.
Henry Jackson is no stranger to designing couture. In his younger days, Henry was employed by Oscar De La Renta, Bill Blass, and Valentino. During those times, Henry recognized a need for couture clothing and luxury clothing for women of "real sizes".
When I asked Henry about his design philosophy, he replied: "My design philosophy has always been to elevate the craft of design via progression from Fashion History into modern functionalism for today's lifestyle while maintaining taste and quality, however after assessing world trends I have re-directed to accommodate and enhance women's self esteem by designing and cutting clothing for more "real" sized women....since the average size here in the US is size 14, and most high end designers only make fashion apparel up to size 10, so I feel it is a lucrative market and it also makes me feel less shallow in choosing fashion as a career."
With his new label simply called Henry Jackson Couture, Henry is putting that philosophy into practice. He is a strong advocate of luxury clothing for women size 12 and above. He is currently in negotiations with seven high end boutiques and department stores to carry his recent Fall collection.
The women that Henry feels would be attracted to his work are "cultured, confident" and make strong clothing choices regardless of current trends, women that "love timeless elegance". Henry is currently making a dress for just such a woman, to be worn at the Tony Awards no less but who's name for now shall remain secret.
Henry enjoyed his brief visit in Boston down memory lane and he feels confident that he'll return to show here again. For now, he is hard at work with his upcoming show for New York Fashion Week which he tells me will be a highly memorable occasion. What that means, we'll have to wait and see.
