Design Needs All at Neiman Marcus
by Ian L

A day after the Senior Fashion Show, members of the Italian Trade Commission, the faculty at Mass Art and fashion design students gathered at Neiman Marcus in Copley Place to celebrate their first ever partnership.

Neiman Marcus was more than happy to host the Design Needs All presentation event where two person teams of student designers made garments with fabric provided by some of the top textile mills in Italy such as Vitale Barberis Canonico SPA, Zenga Baruffa Lane Borgosesia SPA, Tessitura Monti SPA, TMR Cederna Fodere, Unifici E Canapificia Nazionale SPA and Lanificio Policarpo SPA. Sixteen designs were then chosen to be displayed in the Neiman Marcus windows as well as special areas on the first and second floors.

The collaboration between the Italian Trade Commission and Mass Art started with a trip made to Italy by Head Professor of Fashion Design, Sondra Grace. It was during that vacation where Sondra met a few members of the ITC. A conversation was started and in relatively short time, that conversation blossomed and became a full-fledged partnership.

The partnership is beneficial to both parties. The students gain experience with some of the finest luxury fabrics available in the global market. This, aside from personal skill, will vastly improve the quality of their work. And should the students upon graduation wish to design their first collections, gaining access to Italy's textile mills won't be such an insurmountable task. The ITC for their part will gain access to a market of potential new designers and at the same time, promote the fine luxuries that Italy has to offer to new American businesses.

This partnership is sure to last. Mass Art's Fashion Design program, already one of the best in the region has gotten that much better with all the benefits a collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission offers. I'm looking forward to seeing what amazing designs next year's presentation will bring.
