The School of Fashion Design hosts:
"Form, Fit, Fashion" with author Jay Calderin
by Ian J Larraga
Jay Calderin is a man of many titles here in Boston. He is a passionate teacher at the School of Fashion Design on Newbury St. He also teaches special courses at the Boston Center for Adult Education. He is the regional director of Fashion Group International Boston. To many of us in the industry, he is the founder of Boston Fashion Week. Jay can proudly add one more title to that long list of accomplishments, that of author for "Form, Fit, Fashion".
Becoming an author was not something Jay was planning on doing. It was an out-of-the-blue phone call from editor Alicia Kennedy that Jay thought was a joke at first, that set the wheels in motion. With permission to write "carte blanche", it wasn't long before "Form, Fit and Fashion" was born.
I had a chance to look over "Form, Fit, Fashion" and I must say, I really enjoyed the book. As someone who took fashion design courses in the 90's, this book would have been very useful to me. It's not a technical book to a high degree but it answers many questions about the business and creative process of fashion that most technical books leave out.
"Form, Fit, Fashion" covers a bit of fashion history and fashion culture and it has insightful interviews with well known designers such as Ralph Rucci, Yeolee Teng, Joe Abboud, and Isaac Mizrahi. The heart of the book deals with the entire design process from conception to construction and to branding and marketing. The book is a required reading for Jay's Adult Education programs.
Tonight was a special evening for Jay as the School of Fashion Design hosted a special interview and book signing for "Form, Fit, Fashion". The special interview was conducted by Jay's good friend Christopher Muther, style writer for the Boston Globe.
During the interview, we learn a great deal about Jay's early life in the Bronx and his early love of fashion, his time working in a fashion house, his burn out with New York fashion, his move to Boston that revitalized him and his love of teaching.
